Our Brand ... and You

Merchandise and Apparel

Photo of a white coat with the UT Southwestern logo.

The UT Southwestern logo can be placed on clothing and other items only by a vendor who is an approved licensee of UT Southwestern Medical Center. The vendor list is divided into two categories:

  1. Vendors with restricted license rights who can only produce materials ordered by employees, for employees
  2. Vendors with standard license rights who can produce branded materials for sale or giveaway to the general public

Approved vendors are those who have gone through the licensing process with the University of Texas System and have paid for the rights to reproduce our logo properly. In addition, these vendors have won a bid with UT Southwestern Medical Center and are contracted for payment. All purchases of promotional products should go through the UT Southwestern Procurement Portal. If a vendor is not listed in the Procurement Portal, it cannot be worked with to reproduce any UT Southwestern marks. To find an approved vendor, please reference the UTSW Vendor List published by the UT System Office of Brand, Trademarks, and Licensing.

To order lab coats or other apparel, contact the South Campus University Store at 214-648-3615.

Approval Process

  1. You may work with any UT System-approved vendor for UT Southwestern to order branded merchandise when the guidelines outlined below are followed. The vendor will provide a digital proof for review.
  2. Digital proofs should be uploaded to the UTSW Brand Approval form in ServiceNow for review. The Brand team will review a mockup only to approve or deny the UT Southwestern logo or UTSW icon usage. The UTSW Office of Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs is not responsible for approving unique art created by student organizations.
  3. Once logo usage on the mockup is deemed compliant by the UTSW Brand team, you may ask the vendor to proceed with producing the merchandise or apparel.
  4. UTSW-approved vendors must submit the art to the UT System through the BrandManager360 platform for overall brand approval. All approved vendors have instructions on how to do this. Once the UT System approves, the vendor can print the whole order.
  5. The UTSW Brand team strongly encourages you to have a preproduction sample created and shipped for your review before printing the whole order. This gives you an opportunity to check the accuracy and quality of the product.

NOTE: Student organizations should work with the Office of Student Life on placing an order for T-shirts or UT Southwestern logo items. Contact the office here.

UT Southwestern Medical Center logo and UTSW graphic

Logo, Icon, and Trademark Usage

The full UT Southwestern Medical Center logo is the preferred mark of the institution. It should not be reproduced less than 1.25 inches wide or more than 3.5 inches wide. (See below for T-shirt guidelines.) If a merchandise item has an imprint space of less than 1.25 inches wide, the abbreviated UTSW icon should be used. The UTSW icon should not be paired with any additional text.

UT Southwestern exclusively uses the logo files with the trademark symbol ("TM") on branded merchandise and apparel. All advertising for the institution, including print ads, flyers, digital ads, social media, etc. should not use the logo with the “TM.”

The trademark symbol “TM” gives us claim over the lettering in the UT Southwestern design so that it cannot be used or claimed by another organization. On our institutional logo, the “TM” is placed at the end of “Medical Center.” On our icon, the “TM” is placed to the bottom right of the “W.” The “TM” is not used with brand extension logos or third-line logos. The “TM” should be paired with the full UT Southwestern Medical Center logo when reproduced at 2.25 inches wide or more and with the UTSW icon when reproduced at .75 inches wide or more. The “TM” should not be used in embroidery (see below for embroidery guidelines).

Embroidery Guidelines

Logo

White coats (for providers) should have the “UT Southwestern Medical Group” logo, unless a provider practices exclusively at Children’s Health, in which case it should be the “UT Southwestern Pediatric Group” logo. The institution’s primary logo, “UT Southwestern Medical Center,” can be used on research lab coats and all other apparel. Jackets and other branded items for the general campus should have the institutional “UT Southwestern Medical Center” logo. The following groups can replace “Medical Center” with their name on items for their specific entity (e.g., “UT Southwestern School of Health Professions”):

  • Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
  • Medical Group
  • Medical School
  • O’Donnell Brain Institute
  • O’Donnell School of Public Health
  • Pediatric Group
  • School of Health Professions
  • Simmons Cancer Center

Logos for all white lab coats should be placed on the right chest.

Logos for all other apparel should be placed on the left chest.

Embroidered logos should not include the "TM" or ® symbol.

Original logo files can be obtained through the UTSW Office of Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs by emailing brandidentity@utsouthwestern.edu.

Naming

White coat embroidery should include the provider’s name, postnominal letters denoting professional clinical degrees, and medical specialty. The provider’s name and specialty should be placed on the left chest.

Jacket embroidery can include a person’s name. It should follow the same format as for white coats: name, postnominal letters, and medical specialty. Names should be placed on the right chest.

Example:

Mack Mitchell, M.D.
Digestive & Liver Diseases

Note that embroidery should not include the department/division name or an individual’s job title or function.

Stylistic

An ampersand (&) should be used instead of the word “and” within a medical specialty. The "TM" symbol is not required for embroidery (but is for screen printing).
